The Ultimate Back Pain Relief - Memory Foam Mattresses

Visco-elastic foam, or "memory foam" as it is commonly known, is a revolutionary development in sleeping technology. It's called memory foam for a good reason...it molds to, and remembers, shapes of objects placed on it. Memory foam mattresses therefore mold to your body shape, reliving pressure on all your joints, especially your back. If you suffer from back or joint pain, this should make your eyes widen beyond belief...that's right, no more pain when you sleep at night. When you sleep on a one, you will have one of the best night's sleep of your life.

Mattresses are totally personal- different individuals prefer different types. However, there are a lot of bogus versions out there that can do you more harm than good. So when looking at purchasing a decent model, keep some of the following points in mind, and don't be afraid to climb aboard and try before you buy...after all you'll be the one sleeping on it!

- Does it provide you with adequate support and pressure relief?
- Will it fit your bed?
- Are you looking for quality or price?
- Do you think you'll sleep well on it? (Well that's the whole point!)

Memory foam mattresses come in a variety of shapes and sizes. The ideal sizes to buy are double and king size due to the supreme space you get...nobody likes to be cramped up. However you can also purchase a memory foam topper/pad to go on top of your current mattress, a helpful alternative.

The absolute best quality you can buy are Tempurpedic mattresses. The foam used in these is state of the art space age technology, designed and developed by NASA. If you really want to experience the best they have to offer, you should also consider purchasing a tempur bed deal, where you get a mattress and bed frame together. Alternatives to Tempura mattresses are Hypnos mattress which also provide support and comfort, giving an excellent night's sleep and Natural mattress, made using natural materials and natural oils...these are great.

You might also like to consider looking at Tempurpedic pillows to go with your mattress- these really do give your head and neck the best support, you'll be fast asleep in minutes.

Memory Foam Mattress Saves Relationship

A memory foam mattress can improve your love life.

Have you ever looked at a couple who are very different to each other in size and weight and wondered how they ever manage to get a good night sleep together? I have some friends like this, she is small and petite and he is tall and a lot heavier than she is. I asked them how they get on together in bed.

The spring mattress was no good for different sized partners

It turns out that they did have problems that they endured for years and it almost broke up their relationship. They used to sleep on a conventional spring mattress that simply wasn't designed for two people of such dissimilar sizes. They told me of how the mattress fell into a hole when he lay on it and she had no option but to roll into the hole with him.

Well this was intimate I have to say but there are times when you are in bed, that you just want to get some sleep and trying to climb your way out of a hole isn't the way to do it. The problem was made worse on hot nights when they just couldn't get away from each other to cool off.

He didn't see the problem!

Now he was ok with this of course, he got into bed, fell into his hole in the mattress and nothing bothered him until the morning. She on the other hand, told me stories of how she would try to sleep on the edge of the hole to avoid rolling into the middle. Sometimes this worked but more often than not she would just roll down the side of the cliff and occasionally she would roll the other way and fall right out of bed.

Action was required

Well something had to be done. They either had to do something about the bed or sleep in separate rooms. They didn't want separate sleeping arrangements so they decided to change their mattress for one that would accommodate their different sizes and after a lot of research they settled on a memory foam mattress.

The difference was dramatic

The difference was nothing short of amazing they told me. It surpassed even their wildest expectations after putting up with their old mattress for so long. The mattress adapted itself to each of their body shapes and sizes almost as if the other partner wasn't in the bed at all. No longer was there a hole for her to fall into and they could choose to be as far apart or as close as they wanted to be.

It may have saved their relationship

Having talked to this couple both before and after the memory foam mattress on many occasions I'm convinced that the mattress may have saved their relationship by allowing them to enjoy sleeping together again.

Memory Foam Mattresses - Why You Should Sleep on One

If you have not heard of memory foam mattresses before, here is a brief summary of what they are, what they do, and importantly why you should sleep on one.

What is memory foam?

Memory foam, or visco elastic memory foam, is a Hi-Tec material that was developed as part of the NASA space project. It has unique qualities that see it combine a molding or contouring capability that results in an identical imprint of any body or object placed on it, with an ability to consistently return to its original shape.

Put simply, this material shapes and contours itself to any weight that is placed upon it, but then returns to its original smooth profile once the weight is removed.

Why use memory foam in a mattress?

Conventional mattresses use springs or coils to accommodate the weight and shape of the human body, but they do have some drawbacks.

Firstly, mattresses that use springs come in grades that range from soft to hard, with soft mattresses being easily compressible and hard ones offering much more resistance.

The problem remains that these mattresses cannot react to an individual body shape, or adapt to changing positions during sleep. They are in effect passive and offer resistance rather than support.

The second problem with conventional spring based mattresses is that, in a double bed, the movement of one sleeper directly affects that of the other. Spring mattresses deflect and warp not only around the sleeper, but beyond them and into the sleeping zone of the second sleeper. This can cause the night time movement of one person to disrupt the sleep of a second person in the same bed.

What is the benefit of a memory foam mattress?

Unlike spring based mattress constructions, memory foam mattresses react to the unique shape and weight of anyone who sleeps on them. This means that the mattress compresses below, and shapes around, the person resting on it.

By doing this the mattress actively responds to the physical characteristics of each and every person who lies on it and, in so doing, it provides a perfectly balanced level of body support.

For this reason, memory foam mattress products are able to avoid uncomfortable pressure areas around the body's main joints like the pelvic and hip zone. They also re-balance the level of support provided every time that a sleeper moves or changes position.

Additionally, movements by one sleeper do not cause deflections or "waves" in the mattress that disrupt a second sleeper, so two people can sleep and move with total independence of one another.

In short, memory foam mattresses react actively to any sleeper and any movements that they make, but without impacting on the position, cushioning, support or sleep of a second sleeper in the same bed.

Is a memory foam mattress the right choice for you?
